TEST PREP

College Entrance Exams: SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests
The most important consideration in college admissions decisions is high school performance, largely represented by GPA. Unfortunately, the second most important consideration is often performance on the standardized college admission tests, the ACT and SAT. Though at Aspire Education Project we do not necessarily believe that that these tests should carry as much weight as they do in the admissions process, we have dedicated considerable energy toward helping prepare our students to do their very best on these exams. No one should be kept from his/her college aspirations because of poor test performance. Because students vary so much in educational background, college goals, time available to prepare, and testing needs, we provide a personalized program to each student we work with.

High School Exit and Entrance Exams: CAHSEE, ISEE, HSPT
Aspire Education Project offers a similar program for the California High School Exit Exam, CAHSEE, and for high school entrance exams such as the ISEE and the HSPT.

Free Consultation
The first step in planning for test preparation should be signing up for a free consultation. During the consultation we discuss the pros and cons of different answers to the following three questions:

  1. What tests do you need to take and which will be best suited to your needs? This segment includes a thorough discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the different exams.
  2. How much test preparation should you complete and in what areas in order to maximize your potential score? We discuss various options, from preparation you may want to complete on your own to preparation best completed in a class to focused areas where you may want private instruction.
  3. When should you complete this preparation and when should you take your tests?

To sign up for a consultation call 510-658-7500 or email info@aspireeducation.org

Personalized Program
Once the questions from the consultation have been considered, families who choose to work with Aspire Education Project determine which type of preparation will work best for them. Different students have different needs: a student who has already done some advance preparation may only want two or three sessions of review on a particular subject. On the other hand, a student who wants to cover every detail of every area of the test may meet with us more than twenty times over many months.

Private Tutoring in the Home: Many students prefer this option for the individualized attention, scheduling convenience, and the efficiency of working carefully only on those areas where help is needed. Many students will need fewer private sessions than they would need classes.

Small Group Classes: Some test preparation can be conducted very successfully in small groups. When re-learning geometry, for example, it doesn’t matter if other students are hearing the material at the same time. Though some students find it more difficult to concentrate in a group, others are motivated by the cooperative spirit. We conduct group classes throughout the year at various locations.

Licensed Curriculum
All Aspire Education Project test preparation is conducted with a licensed curriculum based on over sixteen years of experience. Rather than teaching many different techniques for various types of problems, the program emphasizes simple, foundational approaches that help the student reach his/her full capacity. The program is focused on the following four elements:

  1. A review of academic knowledge retained from schooling in the areas of reading, grammar, essay writing, and math.
  2. An analysis of the dynamics of the particular test, including timing, test layout, trap avoidance, successful guessing, and test taking strategies.
  3. The acquisition of optimum test taking psychology: dealing with nervousness, distraction and fatigue.
  4. Practice. As with most games, the more you play the better you get.

Some of Aspire education Project ’s very best educators become test-prep trainers. They are thoroughly trained in the tests’ subject matter and test-taking techniques. Our educators are friendly, easy to get along with, and know how to explain things clearly. They will work with the student’s natural motivation to keep him/her focused and engaged during the entire process.
