BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Aleka Calsoyas (President), has a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in Mathematics and French, a PhD in French from U.C. Irvine and an MBA from the U.C. Berkeley Haas School of Business. She has taught language and writing for seven years at the university level. From 2005-2008 she was the Director of Operations and Finance for Aspire Education Project.
Hannah Greene received her B.A. in History from Yale University and an M.A. in Music History from University of California, Berkeley. She served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Western Massachusetts and has taught courses at the university level in music appreciation and sight singing. She worked for Aspire Education Project as Home Tutoring Manager, tutor and after-school coordinator before pursuing a career in local politics.
Chad Harlow (Secretary) has a B.A. in English from the University of New Hampshire and an M.A. in English from Boston College. He has worked in independent education for 14 years. He began his career teaching middle school English in Florida, and then moved to the Bay Area to teach English and coach lacrosse at University High School. He served as Academic Dean at Bentley School for five years, where he was an NAIS Aspiring Head’s Fellow, and is now back at UHS teaching English and serving as Associate Director of College Counseling.
Matthew Hulse, has a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley. He has ten years teaching experience in East Bay high schools, including Kennedy High School (Richmond), Far West (Oakland), McClymonds (Oakland), Contra Costa Alternative School (Orinda) and Sacred Heart (Menlo Park). He has also taught at Ohlone College and Foothill College. He ran his own private tutoring business for 15 years and has worked as an educator and administrator for other for-profit tutoring companies. He also has 18 years of experience as an educator and social worker for church. He is the Executive Director for Aspire Education Project.
Theresa "Tes" Esparrago Lieu, has a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in Sociology with a minor in Asian American Studies, and a M.A. in Sociology of Education, with a concentration in Education Policy from New York University. She has worked in various areas of education including: college advising, Supplemental Educational Services, and charter schools, and is currently working for ConnectEd: The California Center for College and Career.
Steven Purcell (Treasurer), has a B.S. from the University of Southern California in Industrial and Systems Engineering and a MBA from Pepperdine University. He has more than five years experience in leading high performing operations and implementing performance management systems. He has also worked in both the private and education sector. He is currently a Broad Resident working in the central office of the San Francisco Unified School District.
